About this site
A small site that makes original birthday memes. No collection of other people's images, no scraping, no watermark, no account.
What we actually do
Most birthday meme pages are collections. Somebody gathers fifty images from around the internet, puts them on a page, and the page ranks. The images belong to whoever made them, which is usually a film studio.
We decided to do the harder version. Every caption on this site is written here. The illustrated characters are drawn here and exist nowhere else. The photographs come from freely licensed stock libraries, and every photographer is named on the image credits page.
Why there's no SpongeBob
The most popular meme templates are screenshots from films and television. Everyone uses them and almost nobody gets sued, but "almost nobody" is not the same as "nobody" — small publishers do get letters, and a site that runs on other people's frames is built on sand.
So we gave up an entire category of easy jokes. The trade is that everything here is ours, which means we can keep it up without worrying about it, and you can send it without wondering where it came from.
How the memes get made
Captions first, always. We write the line, and only if the line is good enough does it get an image. That ordering matters: it's why you'll find jokes here about thermostats and parking opinions rather than another cake with too many candles.
The illustrations are built as code rather than drawn by hand or generated, which is why the same six characters look identical every time they appear. The photographs are chosen for expression and for having enough empty space to put words in — a surprising number of otherwise good birthday photos already have "Happy Birthday" printed somewhere in frame, and those are no use to us.
Using them
Send them anywhere. Print them. Put one on a card. The only thing we ask is that you don't repackage the collection and sell it as a product. Full terms are on the terms page.
